How to Calculate Landscaping Materials

Whether you're laying down gravel for a driveway, spreading mulch in garden beds, or adding topsoil to your lawn, calculating the right amount of material is essential. Over-ordering wastes money, and under-ordering means multiple trips to the supply yard.

To determine how much material you need, you first calculate the total area in square feet. For a rectangular space, multiply the length by the width. Then, you multiply that area by your desired depth (converted into feet). Since bulk landscaping materials are sold in cubic yards, you divide the total cubic feet by 27 to find your required yardage.

Estimating Tons vs. Cubic Yards

While mulch and soil are almost exclusively sold by the cubic yard or in bags, gravel and crushed stone are often sold by the ton. The exact conversion depends on the type of stone and its moisture content, but general rules of thumb apply:

Gravel & Crushed Stone: 1 cubic yard typically weighs about 1.4 tons (2,800 lbs).
Topsoil & Dirt: 1 cubic yard weighs roughly 1.0 to 1.2 tons depending on moisture and composition.
Wood Mulch: 1 cubic yard is very light, usually weighing between 600 and 800 lbs (0.3 to 0.4 tons).

Buying Bulk vs. Bags

For small touch-up jobs or tiny garden beds, buying material in bags from a big-box store is convenient. Standard gravel and soil bags usually contain 0.5 cubic feet of material, while standard mulch bags contain 2 cubic feet. If your project requires more than 1 or 2 cubic yards of material, ordering a bulk delivery from a local landscape supply yard is almost always significantly cheaper.
