- 20% Waste: Necessary when working with highly patterned materials (like specific wallpapers or custom patterned tiles) where the pieces must align perfectly across seams, forcing you to discard viable material just to match the pattern.
Estimating Project Costs
Once you know your total required square footage (including waste), determining your material cost is simple multiplication. Let's say you need 220 square feet of flooring, and the material retails for $3.50 per square foot. The material cost will be $770.00.
However, keep in mind that this only covers the surface material. A true budget should also account for underlayment, transition strips, baseboards, adhesives, and of course, labor if you are hiring a professional contractor.
