Estimating drywall for a room requires calculating the total surface area of all walls and the ceiling (if applicable), then adding a waste factor to account for cutoffs, mistakes, and awkward corners. The simplest way to calculate wall area is to measure the total perimeter of the room and multiply it by the ceiling height. The formula is: (Length + Length + Width + Width) × Height = Total Wall Sq Ft. If you are drywalling the ceiling, multiply the length by the width to find the ceiling area and add it to the total.
Our drywall calculator automatically includes a standard 10% waste factor in the final square footage and sheet counts. Unless your wall dimensions are perfect multiples of 4 feet, you will have leftover cut pieces that cannot easily be reused without creating weak points or requiring excessive finishing work. Complex rooms with angles, multiple windows, or vaulted ceilings may even require a 15% to 20% waste factor.
